STEP 2

Revise Your Health Literacy

Revise your menopause health literacy

Understanding menopause is one of the most empowering steps you can take.

Let’s discuss Menopause first

Menopause marks the end of menstruation due to reduced ovarian hormone production. It is officially diagnosed after one full year without a period, not caused by any pathology.

The average age is 51, but normal onset ranges from 40–60.

The three stages:

  1. Premenopause – the time before hormonal shifts begin.
  2. Perimenopause – the transition when hormones fluctuate, but you haven't reached a full year without a period.
  3. Postmenopause – begins after that full year of amenorrhea

Symptoms vary widely among women. Some commonly reported ones include:

  • Hot flashes
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Sleep issues
  • Somatic complaints
  • Urinary changes
  • Mood fluctuations
  • Sexual dysfunction

Understanding these stages will help you navigate this phase with more confidence.

Gather and appraise scientific information

With menopause becoming a public conversation, the volume of information can be overwhelming. To stay safe and informed:

  • Look for evidence-based sources
  • Rely on credible organizations, such as:
    • North American Menopause Society (NAMS)
    • Canadian Menopause Society (CMS)
    • American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG)
  • Use trusted research databases: MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Cochrane
  • Explore high-quality AI-supported evidence review tools (e.g., Consensus App)

Hierarchy of scientific evidence (best → least reliable):

  1. Systematic reviews
  2. Critically appraised topics
  3. Critically appraised individual articles
  4. Randomized controlled trials
  5. Cohort studies
  6. Case-controlled studies
  7. Blog posts
